I’ve been renting my little space at Hamilton House for nearly 6 years now – I’ve reached a point where I pretty much take it for granted, which is sad because it’s a completely amazing thing. The rates are extremely competitive, the space and amenities are fantastic and there is so much going on in Hamilton House – tenants lunch on Thursdays, low-cost healing on Wednesdays, countless classes, events, open days and other goings on.
Now that is all set to change – negotiations are taking place between Coexist (the managers of Hamilton House) and Connolly and Callaghan, the landlords, regarding the future of the property. In a big tenants meeting earlier this summer the tenants were given the opportunity to raise concerns and questions with a representative from C&C. The answers we got back spoke of responsibility, community, fairness, a better future. All things that marry perfectly with the values of Coexist. The only problem is, C&C’s behaviour didn’t seem to reflect these values. As the meeting went on, worrying inconsistencies and contradictions kept cropping up. I left the meeting feeling none the wiser about what will happen to Hamilton House, and what C&C’s intentions are.
What I do know is that there are people in Hamilton House and the wider area mobilising to protect the future of this community and any support you can sling their way would be greatly appreciated. Be assured, it’s not just about ensuring creatives like me have somewhere to work – this affects dozens of organisations in and around Hamilton House who are striving to improve and serve the community in exactly the way C&C say they want to.
